Southpaw

2015 - 3/5

Although I've read twice (not full reviews) that this is an average movie, I still really want to see it. Mainly because I really like Jake Gyllenhaal and he is jacked!

When I first saw the trailer of this movie and heard the song, I immediately thought of 8 Mile. When I checked IMDB trivia, it said that the film was originally considered as an unofficial follow-up to the movie 8 Mile with Eminem reprising his role.

If I had to sum up this movie in one mathematical equation, it would be this:
(Mrs. Doubtfire + 8 Mile) x Warrior

If you’re looking for a gritty movie, I wouldn’t say this is it. It has a dark undertone, but it isn’t gritty. This movie does follow the typical plot path, and there isn’t anything outstanding about the script, but the acting from all parties is this movies high point.

Gyllenhaal’s performance was as solid as his muscles. I want to say that he carriers this movie, it was a good movie on its own, Gyllenhaal just enhances it. He is obviously so dedicated as an actor and he takes on the character of Billy Hope so well. He is such a versatile actor and I enjoyed watching him on screen.

I found it hard to understand Gyllenhaal and 50 Cent at times because they were mumbling. It’s clear that 50 Cent isn’t an actor, but thankfully he didn’t have a huge role.

***SPOILER ALERT***
I think the whole Hoppy thing could have been left out. It was kind of shoehorned in, so it didn’t have the full effect it could have. Also, this movie didn’t need a side story like that anyways.

Cut Bank

2014 - 0/5

I got about 10 minutes in and I had to turn it off. The only good part about me watching this movie was that I had a beer in my hand. And 10 minutes in, I could tell that this movie was going downhill as fast as my beer.

Beyond the Reach

2014 - 0/5

This is the exact type of movie that has so much potential, but the execution is where it fails miserably. There are times in which its setting you up for something really good, but what actually pans out just falls flat. Ugh, and I hated the whole girlfriend thing. You knew exactly what was going to happen in whatever scene she was in.

Obviously Michael Douglas was supposed to sell this movie because I've never heard of the kid that plays... well, I don't even remember his name in the movie (update: it's Ben). Douglas did okay, but the kid wasn't that great; at least he had a nice body.
