Coco

2017 - 4/5

Thoughts before seeing the movie:
I could not be more excited to see this movie. If you know me, you'll know that Disney/Pixar are my absolute FAVOURITE animated movie company. I would be lying if I said that I'm not going into this movie with anything but high hopes. One thing that I am most likely going to be comparing this to is 20th Century Fox's, The Book of Life.

Thoughts after seeing the movie:

The plot is one that has been done before… a kid who wants to do one thing, but a family that is trying to get him to do another. It was a bit familiar, but where Pixar gets the points is the storytelling, the visuals, the voice acting and everything else.

When it comes to the plot, ya, like I said earlier, it has been done before. Case in point, The Book of Life (2014). I mentioned above that I was worried that I was going to be comparing this movie to that the entire time, but honestly, after the first 5 minutes, I forgot about The Book of Life. Yes, they do have the very same basic premise, but how they go about telling the story is very different.

I think it’s fair to say that it is expected that any Pixar movie be visually stunning, and this movie was no different. Whether it was the land of the living or the land of the dead, it was done so beautifully and I could only imagine how much time and effort went into one scene, let alone the entire movie.

The music as a whole worked incredibly well. I can’t say that I remember a specific song, but whatever it was paired with on screen worked incredibly well.

***SPOILER ALERT***
The characters were great in this movie. I think the amount of time spent developing each character, mainly Miguel and Hector was perfect. As the movie goes on, Miguel learns that there’s no point in being an amazing musician unless you have the support of your family and someone to share it with. It was nice that he was able to learn how to balance his own wants and needs with his family values. As for Hector, I loved how as the movie progressed, we got to learn more about him. When it came to light that he was indeed Miguel’s great, great, great(?) grandfather, it was a twist that I didn’t see coming (despite some things that would give it away). It was heartbreaking because for the majority of the movie, you’re rooting for Miguel, but then you kind of end rooting for Hector more so, but it ends up working out because they’re of the same bloodline. Even Dante, the dog had a little bit of character development (turning into a true spirit guide); he was used sparingly, which was nice because I hate when they overuse the comic relief and end up relying on it too much.

It was a typical story, told in a Pixar way. If you like Pixar, you’re going to like this movie. If you think you’re going to be comparing it to The Book of Life, I can assure you that that won’t happen.

Wonder Woman

2017 - 3/5

for someone who is not a huge fan of superhero movies, i will say that i did like this. the acting was better than i had expected, the plot wasn't cheesey either.

Welcome to Me

2017 - 2.5/5

i'd like to read from a prepared statement:
it was more entertaining than i thought it would be. i liked the mellow dramatic tone it had and i think it worked. Kristen Wiig did a pretty job with the character. not the best movie ever in it's genre, but it did keep me entertained while i was sitting in an airport.

Cars 3

2017 - 2.6/5

watched this on the plane. more like the first than the second... Cruz Ramirez was a good addition (i'm a fan of Cristela Alonzo). i really enjoyed this one.

Coraline

 2009 - _/5

didn't care for it... wouldn't watch again.

August 19, 2017

Deadpool

2016 - _/5

not a sally movie. but that doesn't mean i think it was bad... just not a movie i cared for.

The Edge of Seventeen

2016 - 2.5/5

nothing special. acted well enough. nothing outstanding that i need to rave about. typically teen movie that hasn't added anything new to the genre. The director for sure tried to make more of an emotional impact with certain scenes, but they never really went as far as intended.

Baywatch

2017 - 0.2/5

Oh. My. God. My short review for this movie is that I'm not entirely sure how a movie that was made for 2017 was cheesier and MORE horrible than the TV show it was based on from 20 years ago. Having said that, I will proudly admit that I actually liked the show back in the day. For its time, it was a good show.

I know this movie wasn't meant to be a great movie. I know going into this movie that it would have its fair share of cheesiness, but my god! It jolted back and forth from "comedy" to "drama" and had more ups and downs than a girl on her period!!! And yes, I did use quotes, because this movie was neither a comedy nor drama!

One minute, Zac Efron's character is talking to the girl he likes and he can't help but look at her boobs and they have [an unnecessarily drawn out] banter between them, and literally the next scene, they're having a dramatic moment in which Efron's character is telling her his sad sop story and how he started swimming; and I shit you not, all it was, was the following: "I grew up in 3 foster homes. One had a pool, so that's how I started swimming". My note to the writers of this movie: wow, that was about as deep as the ocean that Efron's character got shoved into whilst in the cage - for those of you who haven't seen this movie, it was less than 20 metres. Besides, Efron and the chick had ZERO chemistry; and I am not just saying that because I am in love with the man. And for someone that has been a fan of Efron since his HSM days (no shame), this was his WORST acting ever! If he, for whatever reason thought that this would win anyone over, it will not happen. And some might say, "well, I'm only going to see this movie to stare at Efron for 2 hours"... even that seemed off. I'm not sure if his face just looked really weird with certain camera angles (he almost looked too pretty) or if it was super photo-shopped/edited, but even his body didn't seem right.

It seemed as if most of the "drama" came from Mitch (Dwayne Johnson), and the rest of the crap came from everyone else. It's as if Dwayne Johnson was the only person who thought this movie was supposed to be a drama, and everyone else was not just on a different page, they were in a different book, in a different library, in a different country, in a different language.

Random notes:
-Really?! Ronnie gets to be a lifeguard because he has heart? Um, no, if I'm drowning, I want someone that'll get to me in a timely manner and actually save my ass!
-the plot flip-flopped too much for its own good. It's as if the director had no idea where to go with scenes and just ended it abruptly and moved on.

Yes, this movie does poke fun at itself and what it was supposed to be, we've seen it done before, but this movie did not do it well. This movie was all kinds of levels of bad. Who in their right mind thought this was a good idea? Who watched this movie and said, "Yes, this will be the final cut that we release to the public!"? All I'm saying is that someone needs to get fired.

The Fate of the Furious

2017 - 3/5

I'm gonna say that it is going to be super easy to shit on this movie, but i never go into these movies thinking they will turn out to be masterpeices. i know what i'm getting myself into when i purchase the ticket; and that's exactly what i got: cheesy, but entertaining!

SPOILERS:

they totally forshadowed the baby thing. naming the kid brian... really?

acting:
dom = resting ugly face... he looks bad even when he smiles with his teeth
letty = still annoying and not that great of an actress
luda / tyrese = banter is still funny
the rock = effective and filled his role nicely
the rocks daughter = annoying :| another way for them to ram the aspect of 'family' down our throats
jason statham = i think i liked him in this one the most; the part when he was rescuing the baby was fun
charlize theron = she over did it; seemed like she wasn't even human; also, why did she have dreads
kurt russell = i don't like the guy so i found him annoying
scott eastwood = was only added to fill the void of the "hot white guy"; it didn't work

Beauty & the Beast

2017 - 4.2/5

As a long time Disney fan, I will admit that I had my apprehensions with a live-action remake of a Disney classic! I have to mention that I have yet to see the live-action remake of Cinderella and Jungle Book… despite them being available for free on Netflix.

One thing that I have to mention, just to get this out there, that unfortunately, I was sitting 3 rows up from the screen, so there were 2 parts in which anything that wasn’t directly in the middle of the screen was blurry. I had asked someone who had seen this movie twice, once sitting as close as myself, and the next, sitting further back, and I was told that the blurriness only occurred when it was super close.

When it comes to the acting, I have never seen Emma Watson in anything, so really, this was my introduction to her. I felt as if she did look the part and she acted the part as well. One thing that I will say, and this isn’t a shot at Emma Watson, but rather how the character of Belle wasn’t as warm as the animated movie. Obviously this movie did add moments of Belle being compassionate, but it didn’t sink as deep as it did in the animated movie. I also felt that I was being told that Belle was strange compared to the other people in the town, but it just didn’t come across in the way they intended. It just felt like they were ramming it down my throat that she’s different.

As for the Beast, I didn’t mind the CGI used to create the look. I think it fit and it worked with everything else. Who ever the actor was that played Gaston (…or is it 2 T’s?) did a great job. If anything, I actually liked his acting the most. He did such a good job playing the buff buffoon, I found it hard not liking him. I thought that the actor playing LeFou wouldn’t do a good job, but his character added some comic relief and he did hold his own. Everyone else did a good job too! I liked the voiceovers for all the characters that were household items.

I was a bit worried that it might feel like a 2 hour movie, but it didn’t. the plot never veered off the path, and it had my attention the whole time. Obviously I like the animated version more; that’s not to say that this one was bad in any way, its more so the nostalgic aspect to it that gets the extra points.

Kubo & the Two Strings

2016 - 2/5

absolutely loved the animation
story line wasn't too bad, but i wasn't completely immersed into what was going on; it had a lot of lull moments
good for a one time viewing, but i wouldn't watch it again

It took a while to get into, but I was never really fully into it.

It teeter-totters between more heavy content and then childish. Kubo’s own grandfather and aunts took one of his eyes, yet the next scene

Some animation was really good and I really liked the how they incorporated the paper origami.

It was obvious that they were trying to tell the story in a beautiful way, but it wasn’t as smooth as it should have been.

I was really hoping I’d like Charlize Theron and Matthew McCaughny’s voice, but I really don’t think either one suited the character.
